Commonly asked questions
What are you building in Spartanburg?

NorthMark Compute and Cloud (NMC2) is developing a state-of-the-art High-Performance Computing Center in Spartanburg, South Carolina for its own operations – not for a third-party multi-use tenant. The facility is designed to support advanced computational workloads, including machine learning, scientific research, simulations, and large-scale data analysis. The project repurposes and improves a pre-existing industrial site while integrating next-generation computing and energy infrastructure.

Why are additional permits or applications being filed?

The project scope was communicated from the start and has not changed. From the very beginning, we have followed a normal and deliberate multi-phased approach to this project. Additional applications reflect the planned evolution and scaling and remain consistent with the scope originally presented with state and local officials.

Energy Usage / Air
Will the project create blackouts, increase local electricity demand, or raise utility costs?

No. The facility is designed with dedicated on-site natural gas energy generation which will supply 97% of our energy needs. This approach ensures there is no impact on residential electricity availability or rates. Responsible resource planning is a key part of how the facility was designed, and the goal has always been to ensure that the project can operate efficiently while respecting the needs of the surrounding community.

What type of fuel will the facility use?

We will utilize existing natural gas pipelines for our gas generation systems like those already widely used across South Carolina and throughout the United States. All systems will comply with applicable state and federal environmental standards.

How will the facility manage environmental impacts?

We are committed to extensive environmental stewardship measures, including correcting and cleaning up pre-existing industrial conditions at the property. We will continuously monitor emissions, drive energy efficiency operations measures, and meet or exceed all state and federal environmental regulations.

Water
Will the project impact local water supplies?

The facility will operate within the municipal water capacity previously allocated to the former Kohler facility, requesting no additional water beyond already approved levels. Spartanburg Water has confirmed that the system currently operates at only 34% of daily maximum treatment capacity, with the Broad River Basin projected to support regional demand through at least 2070. Wastewater discharge will be fully permitted through Spartanburg Water’s Industrial Pre-Treatment program in compliance with all SCDES and US EPA requirements.

Will the facility draw water from local groundwater or aquifers?

No. The project’s water supply will come from the municipal system and is not expected to rely on groundwater or aquifer withdrawals.

Noise
Will there be noise control for equipment?

Yes. We recognize that large-scale building projects generate noise. A noise barrier has already been installed for the currently permitted equipment. We are currently in the process of working on additional noise mitigation mechanisms including thoughtful landscape beautification plans.

Will I be able to hear the turbines on site?

We will abide by all Spartanburg County noise regulations. To alleviate as much as much noise as possible, the engines come encased with a noise damping enclosure. As another measure, a design for exhaust flow path silencers is being developed and will be implemented. Finally, the landscape beautification plans will further mitigate the sound of the turbines.

Light
How will you ensure that there is no light pollution from the site into residential neighborhoods?

As lighting is needed, the placement is evaluated to ensure the direction is reflected away from adjacent properties and mounted so the cone of light does not cross property lines. The City Zoning Ordinance is abided by at all times. Additional due diligence is being performed during construction where lighting is moved around site to minimize glare and reflection over the property line.

Spartanburg's success is our success.

We look forward to honoring our commitments and earning our place in this community for decades to come.
